Tapiz Fronteriza de la Virgen de Guadalupe
Collaboration with Gabriela Muñoz

Tapiz Fronteriza de la Virgen de Guadalupe (2009) was originally
constructed for the U.S.-Mexico border between Douglas, AZ and Aqua
Prieta, SON and installed on the border fence December 12, 2009, which
is the Day of Observance for the Virgin of Guadalupe. The paper of the
border tapestry was handmade from indigenous plants. Watercolor and
india ink were used to render the image of the Virgen of Guadalupe. Installation of the tapestry was a communal effort between participants on both sides of the fence. After installation, the piece was left as an offering to both border cities as well as La Virgen.

Tapiz
Fronteriza depicts an
"architectural intervention" on the border fence in Douglas, AZ / Agua Prieta,
Son. Found, personal, and new
fabrics were woven through the border fence, constructing a tapestry held
together by a poignant geopolitical boundary. Both communities in each country were witnesses to the same
event, opposite perspectives.The
segments of fabric represent the past, present and future peoples whose lives
are woven and segmented through the border fence, creating a collective single
image from afar.This work strives
to resurface, re-contextualize, and re-member, so to enhance the perception of
the inauguration and the effect of the border and those of us (you, me) who are bound/woven throughout it.
